Potential participants in the MWHS were screened for eligibility based on the described selection algorithm. Specifically, women between the ages of 45 and 54 years, with an intact uteri and both ovaries, not pregnant, who have not had cancer, who have had their last menstrual period within the last 12 month period, but not within the last 3 month period, and who have not used hormone replacement therapy, herbal or plant substances for treatment of hot flashes were eligible for the MWHS
